Factor in the ubiquity of it and reconnecting with certain people from my past that I've lost touch with and there's the appeal for me. That said, I don't have a problem rejecting friend requests from people I don't consider close friends or those I'm comfortable sharing bits about myself with. It's not perfect by any stretch, but it's a pretty central place I can go and see what most of my friends are up to. Facebook the company, though, is the debil. I hate those mofos.
